In the aftermath of the World Trade Center (WTC) attacks of September 11, 2001, many have been left with concerns over asbestos exposure. The WTC was partially constructed with materials that contained asbestos, and the toxic mineral fibers were found in dust and debris samples from the disaster site following the attack. Agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began testing and monitoring certain areas in and around the community, and found elevated asbestos levels during the initial weeks that followed the attacks. Many workers who aided in the cleanup of the disaster site, as well as volunteers, and survivors of the attacks may have been exposed to asbestos during this time. More information about environmental testing at the WTC may be found by visiting the EPA or DEP online.
