Chicago, IL-Although asbestos-containing products were outlawed in the 1970's, asbestos has still managed to make its way into recent products, potentially exposing hundreds of thousands of people everyday. A recent nationwide class action case has brought forth a shocking example on how asbestos has made its way into our nations market place, posing a serious health hazard to our nations youth. A toy kit, based on the popular "CSI" television drama series, is believed to contain tremolite, one of the deadliest forms of asbestos. The asbestos was discovered in white fingerprint powder in the popular toy kits, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.
After tests conducted by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), on the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Fingerprint Examination Kit (CSI Exam Kit) and the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Forensic Lab Kit (CSI Lab Kit), it was revealed that thousands of kids may have been exposed to the hazardous material. The ADAO Executive Director and co-founder stated, "Even though the dangers of asbestos have been well-documented for more than 100 years, we're still finding asbestos in common household products. That's simply unacceptable." If the asbestos-containing power was inhaled, the microscopic asbestos particles can penetrate lung tissue and stay there permanently. If that happens, it could cause serious, even deadly, respiratory illnesses or cancer than might not fully develop until decades after being exposed.
The startling discovery prompted a proposed nationwide class action settlement against CBS Broadcasting, Inc. and other major toy retailers. The ADAO along with The Public Justice reported that if the settlement is approved it will give cash refunds to consumers and implement a nationwide recall of the hazardous product.
